$10,000 might get you a 3-wheeled electric car in 2019

Three wheels, no problems.

Tons of auto companies are changing up their vehicle designs to feature electric systems instead of internal combustion engines — but for the most part, the cars look the same as their gas-powered counterparts.

Sondors, a crowdfunded auto startup, is looking to shake up the scene at the LA Auto Show with a three-wheel design that could give short-distance commuters a low-cost alternative to pricier (but rangier) electric vehicles. The design immediately catches the eye, and the price will too: the company says the car should cost about $10,000 once it hits the market.

The startup showed off a prototype at the show, claiming that a final version will give drivers a choice for battery packs that offer 75, 150, and 200 miles of range per charge, according to Electrek. Those numbers are higher than you might expect for an odd concept that might not handle well on the highway, so the vehicle will have much to prove.

The startup doesn't have the only three-wheeled concept on the block. Elio Motors's gas-powered commuter has also made waves, but the company hasn't been able to deliver on the hype after being unveiled in 2015.

Sondors will aim to deliver its cars directly to consumers starting in 2019, if it can continue fundraising as projected. The company has much to prove before you should take its plans seriously though — so don't plan on ditching four wheels just yet.
