Over the weekend, Thailand soaked up the festivities during its annual mass water fight, Songkran.

The Thai new year marks the arrival of spring, but visitors to the country also know it as a weekend-long water fight, as major streets get closed, and people arm up with water guns and buckets.

It's also a terrific opportunity for dramatic shots, as these photographers' iPhone shots show. With the likes of Apple, Samsung and other big smartphone makers putting out waterproof models as a default these days, it's easy to capture the splashes up close.

Thai photographer Torwong Salwala said a good amount of light is needed to capture water splashing, so get out in the day and watch for how the light is angled so the water looks varied.

If the light is low, turn on your flash, he added.

Travel shutterbug Suntus Boonsansang demonstrated this effect with a shot at dusk, with the water backlit by the setting sun.

Singapore photographer Yafiq Yusman, who was there for Songkran, said one good trick is to carry a water gun and use it to provoke someone to spray you back.

That sets you up for a head-on shot like this one he captured:
