The PlayStation 4 gets a slimmer, sleeker redesign

The new PlayStation 4, previously dubbed the PS4 Slim by the public, was officially announced by Sony Wednesday.

The PS4 is a smaller, modified version of the original PS4 and is scheduled to replace it in stores starting Sept. 15 for $299.

The changes and updates

Sony didn't pull anything crazy with their new console. The biggest changes to the console are its slimmer design, a matte finish, the lack of lightbar and the lack of optical port in favor of the standard HDMI port.

Aside from dropping the optical port, there is no hardware difference between the original PS4 and the new PS4.

Along with those changes to the console, Sony's DualShock controller also is getting an update. Its lightbar is now visible at the top of the touchpad on the face of the controller so you can see which player you are without flipping the controller over. The controller's buttons and joysticks are also lighter in color.

Before Sony announced the new PS4, videos started appearing online of people unboxing the console and showing off how it differed from the original console, although many of those videos have since been removed.

The new PlayStation 4 was announced next to another PlayStation console, PlayStation 4 Pro, which is like a PlayStation 4.5 and has some hardware upgrades that give it faster processing power and the ability to have 4K resolutions.
