Another Speedtest report, another big win for T-Mobile in the 5G race.

Ookla, which runs Speedtest, a service that measures internet speeds, released its latest report on 5G speeds on Monday. (Note: Mashable and Ookla are both owned by the same parent company.)

As always, it compared the speed, availability, and consistency of Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T’s service. And again, T-Mobile came out on top.

The only thing that's really surprising is that T-Mobile's lead in the speed department grew substantially in the summer months. Measured in median download speed, here's how it shook out:

  1. T-Mobile - 135.17Mbps (up from 99.84)

  2. Verizon - 78.94Mbps (up from 78.33)

  3. AT&T - 72.46Mbps (down from 75.61)

Verizon and AT&T's median download speed remained more or less unchanged, while T-Mobile jumped by about 35 points over a period of just a few months. T-Mobile also won on the availability metric, which measures networks by how many users spend a majority of time connected to 5G. A whopping 64.4 percent of T-Mobile users get steady 5G access, compared to 44.8 percent for AT&T and 34.3 percent for Verizon.

The only competitive category was consistency, which is based on how many 5G tests showed download speeds of at least 25Mbps and upload speeds of at least 3Mbps. Speedtest didn't declare a statistical winner, with each provider scoring between 73 and 79 percent.

Still, it doesn't look like T-Mobile's dominance in the American 5G market will end anytime soon. It looks like the decision to merge with Sprint and absorb its 5G network was a prudent one for T-Mobile, even if T-Mobile might have lied to make it happen.
