Debate rages about whether Spongebob is a sea sponge or a dish sponge

What exactly is Spongebob Squarepants?

He may live in a pineapple under the sea, but just what exactly is Spongebob Squarepants?

Writer and comedian Celeste Yim started a thread on Twitter about the precise nature of Spongebob Squarepants. Specifically, is he a sea sponge or a dish sponge?

There are many different kinds of sea sponge, check out this massive barrel sea sponge, for example.

So Celeste Yim decided to reason things out.

Another Twitter user proffered some useful evidence.

This led to an interesting theory.

But then someone came charging in from team sea sponge.

Soon enough, memes got involved.

Suddenly a new contender was introduced — could Mr Squarepants be a cheese?

Eventually the votes came in, and dish sponge was the clear winner.

What a wild ride.
