A powerful photo from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the eye of Hurricane Dorian, now a Category 5, provides yet more confirmation of the strength of the storm.

The image shows the wing of a plane in front of the eye wall of Dorian, which looks scooped out, or sloped like a bowl or sports stadium. According to the tweet accompanying the image, this "stadium effect" is sometimes observed in strong hurricanes.

According to the Washington Post, strong storms exhibit this effect where "their cores build upward and out, looking like a sports arena."

In an unrelated tweet, meteorologist Philip Klotzbach linked a GIF of the hurricane shown from above, with the eye clearly outlined as it moves towards across the Atlantic Ocean. Klotzbach tweeted that Dorian's wind speed is unprecedented in its specific location.

A later tweet from NBC meteorologist Bill Karins confirmed at Dorian's landfall was the strongest ever recorded.

For continued information about Hurricane Dorian, the National Hurricane Center is posting advisories on its website. Please stay safe.
