'Star Trek Discovery' will feature female lead, gay character
LOS ANGELES -- Move over, Captains Kirk and Picard.
At CBS' Television Critics Association presentation Wednesday, Star Trek Discovery showrunner Bryan Fuller revealed the new series will feature a female lead -- and that she will not be a captain.
There will also "absolutely" be a gay character on board, Fuller said.

"We're going to deep into something that was for me always very tantalizing and to tell that story through a character who is on a journey that is going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy," Fuller told reporters.
"For her to truly understand something that is alien, she has to first understand herself."
This lead character will not be a captain so that viewers can have a “different perspective," Fuller said.
Previous Star Trek shows have all concentrated their focus on a ship's captain -- or, in the cases of Deep Space Nine and Voyager, a Commander and a Vice Admiral respectively.
The series, available on the network's streaming service CBS All Access in January 2017, will comprise of 13 episodes that will tell a "novel"-like story.
Fuller revealed it will be set 10 years before Kirk’s five-year mission, but in the same universe.
For those outside the U.S., the series will be available to stream on Netflix.
