You can't fly a ship without a crew, and May 2017 — the premiere timeframe for Star Trek: Discovery — is closer than it seems.

Michelle Yeoh, star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and its Netflix follow-up, is joining the crew of Trek's long-awaited return to the small screen. It's not clear who she'll play, but informed speculation suggests it's a leading role.

The confirmation came from an unusual source: Nicholas Meyer, the Discovery consulting producer who previously directed Star Trek II and Star Trek VI. He revealed Yeoh's involvement during a ComingSoon interview for his 1979 sci-fi film Time After Time, freshly released on Blu-ray.

Meyer didn't have anything else to say about Discovery; simply, "I know Michelle Yeoh is in it."

The ComingSoon report speculates that Yeoh will step into the lead role. Bryan Fuller, who shifted from showrunner to executive producer in October because of his other commitments, already confirmed that the series will focus on a female lieutenant commander.

Given her acting credentials and her "first announced" status — even if it did come from an unexpected source — Yeoh seems a likely candidate for that role.

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere its first episode on CBS in May 2017, but all subsequent episodes will be released in the U.S. via the network's CBS All Access. The subscription-required streaming service leaves Trek fans with a choice to make: do they pay for a subscription to keep up with the latest Discovery episodes, or do they skip it and wait for streams from other sources?

Star Trek: Discovery episodes will be released on Netflix in 188 countries one day after their premiere, but CBS All Access is the exclusive provider in the United States.
