It's been 6 years since we said goodbye to Stargate Universe, but now a new iteration of the beloved sci-fi franchise is making its way to our screens.

MGM announced at Comic-Con that the studio will be launching a 10-episode premium digital series, Stargate Origins, which will follow fan-favorite character Catherine Langford -- whose father first discovered the Stargate in 1928. Catherine was played by Viveca Lindfors in the original movie and several different actresses in Stargate SG-1.

The live-action show will debut on a dedicated new digital platform, Stargate Command, which will also host a comprehensive collection of Stargate content from across the franchise's 23-year history.

According to MGM, "Origins will explore a brand new chapter in Catherine Langford’s early history surrounding the extraordinary portal. Young Catherine embarks on an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save Earth from unimaginable darkness."

The show will be produced by MGM's Digital Group, directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan (Virtual Morality), and written by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry.

“We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” said Kevin Conroy, President of Digital & New Platforms at MGM. "We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins.”

A release date for the series has yet to be announced, but the series is set to begin production in August. More information about the new series and digital platform will be available on stargatecommand.co in the coming weeks.
