Stephen Colbert can't believe Trump's stance on gun control

"He’s being reasonable?"

What is happening? Did Stephen Colbert just find Donald Trump's opinion on something "reasonable?"

That's exactly what went down on The Late Show on Wednesday, when the talk show host was left flabbergasted by the president's stance in a meeting with members of Congress on gun control.

During the meeting, Trump accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of being unable to pass gun control legislation. No surprise there. (In reality, a Republican-led Congress opposed 23 executive actions on gun control signed by Obama).

Then Trump surprisingly turned on the Republicans, accusing them of being intimidated by the NRA.

“Some of you people are petrified of the NRA," he said. "They have great power over you people, they have less power over me. I don't need it."

But it was here that Colbert was genuinely stumped. Trump told Republicans to ditch their provision allowing concealed-carry permits across state lines, in order to stand up to the NRA.

"You’ll never get that passed. If you add concealed-carry to this, you’ll never get it passed,” he said.

“Well, he’s finally doing something Obama never did. He coming for your guns.”

Colbert, visually floored, said, "He’s being reasonable?"

"I got to give credit to Donald Trump, I never thought he'd go there," said Colbert, noting that Vice President Mike Pence had suggested an early intervention system for taking away people's guns after a hearing. Trump challenged this, instead recommending to "take the guns first, go through the process second."

“Well, he’s finally doing something Obama never did," finished Colbert. "He coming for your guns."

Let's just hope Trump backs up his grandstanding with substantive action, which, let's be honest, doesn't happen often.
