Steve Wozniak, the legendary coder who developed the first Apple computers, won't rush to get the much anticipated iPhone X.

Although "The Woz" typically picks up the latest Apple handset right away, the Apple co-founder told CNBC at the Money 20/20 tech and business conference that he's going to sit this one out -- for now.

"I'd rather wait and watch that one," Wozniak said. "I'm happy with my iPhone 8 -- which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6, to me. For some reason, the iPhone X is going to be the first iPhone I didn't -- on day one -- upgrade to."

Preorders for the iPhone X start on Oct. 27, and the phones are supposed to reach customers' hands on Nov. 3.

It seems Wozniak has grown comfortable with the previous three iPhone offerings, which he finds to be pretty similar. But if Wozniak does grow curious about the iPhone X, the latest handset will always be near. He said his wife plans to get one right away, "so I'll be close enough to see it."

Although Wozniak didn't offer the specific reason why he's not enthralled enough to immediately pick up the iPhone X, Wozniak hinted that his tech enthusiasm lies elsewhere.

"My attention doesn't go to the latest smart phone... a much as it used to. It goes more into articles about electric vehicles and self-driving cars and what companies are doing," said Wozniak.

In that case, Wozniak has a lot to pay attention to. Every major car manufacturer — including Ford, GM, Volkswagen, and Toyota — have bold, well-funded plans to go all-electric.
