This 'Street Fighter V' stage was just pulled for 'unintentional religious references'

The religious references were unintentional.

One of Street Fighter V's latest DLC stages, Thailand Temple Hideout (from Street Fighter II), was pulled off the marketplace because of its background music yesterday. The music behind the Buddhist-themed stage contained Islamic prayers -- not something Capcom intended.

The Islamic prayers in the stage's background music were translated by a Muslim Redditor who goes by Venom44. According to them, the lyrics include references to Allah and the line "By the name of the God, the most merciful."

Capcom did not say that the specific religion was the reason why the stage was pulled, just that the music contained "unintentional religious references." It was likely pulled due to incongruity between the Buddhist imagery and the Islamic music.

The original song was posted on YouTube here:

Players who already bought it can still play on it though.

Capcom released the following statement, saying the music of the Thailand stage would be patched out for players who already purchased the stage and the music will be updated in the future:

It has come to our attention that part of the background music track used in the DLC Thailand Temple Hideout Stage, released on April 25, 2017, contains unintentional religious references. Capcom has therefore immediately ceased distribution of this DLC and, as a temporary measure, will be performing an emergency server maintenance update in the very near future to remove this track by replacing it with existing music from another stage. Details of the timing of this update will be provided via the @SFVServer Twitter account.

Users who have already downloaded this DLC will still be able to use it and, once the emergency maintenance update is complete, will have the replacement music as well.

An edited version of the Thailand Temple Hideout Stage background music will be released at a later date.

The Street Fighter V development and operations team, as well as all of us at Capcom, have nothing but the utmost respect for all faiths and religions around the world, and we would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by this content.

Redditor Venom44 pointed out that the prayers heard in the Thailand stage were the same as the ones from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's Fire Temple. The chants are only present in very early versions of the game and were similarly removed in later versions.
