Looks like the #SKWAD's got themselves a new leader.

The Accountant director Gavin O'Connor is in final negotiations to write and direct the Suicide Squad sequel, Mashable has confirmed. Variety first broke the news.

Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith are all expected to reprise their roles as the Joker, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot, respectively.

For those keeping count at home, that makes three Joker movies now in development: Suicide Squad 2, the Harley Quinn and Joker spinoff, and the "young Joker" prequel – the last of which will not star Leto.

The first Suicide Squad movie, written and directed by David Ayer, was a rushed, messy affair, and got terrible reviews from critics and polarized reactions from fans. Commercially, though, it was a huge success, raking in $745 million worldwide.

Which is why the sequel remains a top priority for Warner Bros. Before O'Connor booked the gig, Jaume Collet-Serra and Mel Gibson were among the other names in the mix. Now, with a director in place, the plan is for Suicide Squad 2 to get in front of cameras by fall 2018.

No release date has been set. If the 2018 start date sticks, though, we can probably expect Suicide Squad in theaters sometime around 2019.
