Boaty McBoatface's legacy lives on.

Last year Transport NSW started a public competition last year in Sydney, Australia, to name their latest ferry. And now an official name has now been announced: Ferry McFerryface.

More than 15,000 suggestions were made in the Name Your Ferry competition. The public was allowed to vote using the Name Your Ferry website and the #yourferry hashtag.

The competition allowed the people from Sydney to take part in the naming process as well as maritime history and they made their voices heard.

Ferry McFerryface will become the latest iconic addition to the harbor. However, this simple competition turned into a perfect example of how ridiculous public voting can be.

Just last year, a similar competition was held in the UK to name a polar research ship, which people voted to call, Boaty McBoatface.

In Sweden the public voted to name a new line of city trains, Trainy McTrainface.

The most votes from the Sydney competition actually went to Boaty McBoatface but the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance decided to go with the second most popular choice as a way to avoid two similar names, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Transport NSW made sure to emphasize that the name is actually official.

If we can learn anything from this competition it’s that people shouldn’t be allowed to vote on new names for public transportation.
