T-Mobile leaves throttling behind with its new 5G unlimited data plan

Magenta Max brings back the true meaning of "unlimited."
T-Mobile leaves throttling behind with its new 5G unlimited data plan

On Feb. 24, T-Mobile is launching a new data plan for those with 5G-enabled smartphones. It's called Magenta Max, and it essentially replaces the provider's Magenta Plus plan. For $57 per-line-per-month, you'll get unlimited talk, text, and data, along with unlimited premium data (i.e., high-speed data) — sans throttling.

If you're unfamiliar with throttling, it's when providers slow down your network speeds once you've used up a lot of data. So, whenever there's network congestion, those with more data available will have priority over faster speeds than those who don't — resulting in slower speeds for the latter.

With Magenta Max, you won't have to worry about any of that. Regardless of how much data you use, and whether it's 4G or 5G, T-Mobile won't throttle your network speeds.

The new plan comes with other perks, too. In addition to true unlimited data, you'll also get unlimited streaming at up to 4K UHD resolution, 40GB of mobile hotspot data (which is reduced to unlimited 3G speeds once you've used it up), and more, as listed in the chart below.

In addition to Magenta Max, T-Mobile offers a standard Magenta plan for $47 per-line-per-month. Rather than unlimited premium data, you'll have up to 100GB (an upgrade from the 50GB the plan used to offer) plus 5GB for the mobile hotspot (up from 3GB).

T-Mobile says those who are currently on Magenta Plus and the original Magenta plan can either stay or switch to the new plans. They'll be able to keep their current devices and existing line promotions.

In an attempt to entice people to jump ship from competitors, T-Mobile is offering a new "Zero Cost to Switch" deal. AT&T and Verizon customers specifically, "can get up to $650 and pay zero device switching costs when they bring their own phones."

It's certainly worth looking into if you're the type that constantly gets those data usage warnings before the end of the month is even near.
