Target announced on Tuesday that customers and employees may use whatever bathroom aligns with their gender identity.

"Everyone deserves to feel like they belong," the company said in a statement. "We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity."

State legislatures across the country are debating a range of bills that would require that residents use bathrooms that correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth.

The most publicized debate over this issue is taking place in North Carolina.

Gov. Pat McRory signed a bill in March that forced the state's cities to block transgender people from using public restrooms, unless they use ones that correspond to their "biological gender."

More than 100 companies, including Starbucks, Facebook, Apple, Twitter, Google and Uber, have signed a letter asking the governor to repeal the law.

Human Rights Campaign is also campaigning for a repeal, and the ACLU is suing the state.

Target is headquartered in Minnesota, where a bill similar to the one passed in North Carolina has been floated by a state senator.
