The teens love Apple — unless it's time to listen to music.

A new survey found Apple is quite popular among young people save for one major product: Apple Music. This adds up, considering Spotify's dominance in that space.

The research comes from Piper Sandler, which does an annual survey of American teens. The investment firm polled 9,193 U.S. teenagers with an average age of 15 years old.

A whopping 87 percent of teens owned an iPhone and roughly the same amount — 88 percent — expect their next device to be an iPhone. Thirty-four percent of teens own an Apple Watch, making it the most popular watch among teens. Forty-two percent of teens used Apple Pay for payments — compare this figure to the 27 percent who use CashApp.

"These trends are encouraging as the company continues to introduce new iPhones — proving the overall stickiness of the product portfolio," the researchers told Business Insider.

In other words, Apple has a tight grip on teens.

But not so much when it comes to music. Spotify was far and away the most popular platform. Seventy percent of teens have used Spotify in the last six months and 46 percent were paying to use it. Less than 40 percent of teens reported using Apple Music, followed by YouTube Music, and Amazon.

As a millennial — in other words, not a youngin' — it's interesting to see folks move away from Apple for music. iTunes and the iPod helped redefine how music was consumed during my adolescence. But as of this writing, Spotify clearly has the advantage in this current era of streaming.

But then again, perhaps that doesn't matter when 90 percent of young people are using their iPhones to download Spotify in the first place.
