UPDATE: March 21, 2016, 3:49 p.m. AEDT Amazon Web Services and Telstra have confirmed to Mashable Australia the issue was due to a third party provider, and not Telstra's network.

"After further investigation we confirmed the problem was related to a third party provider and not Telstra’s network as was mistakenly stated on the Dashboard. Recovery occurred when the third party corrected their defective routing, not as a result of AWS routing traffic away from the Telstra network," AWS said in an update.

Friday didn't start well for Australians already struggling with a huge mobile and Internet outage.

Amazon Web Services, a cloud services platform that supports the websites and data storage of companies around the world, suffered issues on Friday morning following a nationwide Telstra outage.

Telstra, the largest telecommunications company in Australia, had a massive network outage across the country on Thursday night and into Friday morning.

The down time caused mass chaos, with 8 million customers unable to use the Internet, data or make phone calls and affected services such as EFTPOS, electronic systems, banks and Uber. Following the incident, Telstra issued a grovelling apology and offered a day of free data to its customers.

On Friday morning, the problems got worse with Amazon Web Services (AWS) reporting its service locally was affected by issues with Telstra.

"There are confirmed reports of an issue within Telstra's network. This issue is impacting Internet connectivity between some customer networks and AWS Services in the AP-SOUTHEAST-2 Region, as well as Internet connectivity to non-AWS locations," the company posted on its website. "We are working with the provider to determine the scope of the problem and time to resolution. Connectivity to instances and services within the region is not impacted by the event."

Frustrated Telstra customers took to Twitter to complain about problems connecting to AWS sites from 9 a.m. AEDT. There were reports of Slack, Australia Post and other websites being down. By 10:30 a.m. AEDT, the issue had been resolved.

A spokesperson for Telstra told Mashable Australia the issue was not connected to the earlier outage.

"It appears there was a routing issue between Telstra and Amazon Web Services," the spokesperson said in an email. "Amazon changed the routing to a different path, which fixed the issue. We are working now to identify the cause."

It is also believed it affected Optus customers. AWS would not comment further on the cause or number of customers impacted.

Correction: Telstra denies its countrywide outage directly caused Amazon Web Services' outage as previously reported in this story's headline, which has since been corrected. Rather, the Amazon issue was a separate incident., Telstra says
