It's been 28 years since Terminator 2: Judgement Day was released in theatres, but markedly fewer years since we've heard from the franchise. Though various other films tried to capture the success of the first two Terminator movies, few were well-received, and the series seemed to languish.

Now, Terminator's original writer and director James Cameron has returned to the franchise to produce Terminator: Dark Fate, a film that mercifully ignores the shenanigans that took place from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines onward. It's a film many had hoped to see for years, and judging by the initial reactions it may be worth the wait.

Terminator: Dark Fate is due for wide release on November 1, but a few lucky theatregoers across the U.S. have already been treated to a secret viewing. Attendees at Alamo Drafthouse were led to believe they were in for a screening of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but were instead given a surprise screening of the new film.

Nobody seems to have minded. Terminator: Dark Fate has received almost universal praise across the board, with critics applauding a return to the basics that made Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day such massive hits.

The film reunites Cameron with original cast members Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, playing their iconic roles of badass Sarah Connor and the original Terminator respectively. Hamilton is reportedly in top form, reinstated to her rightful place as the linchpin of the Terminator universe, while series newcomer Mackenzie Davis reportedly shines even when up against these massive action icons.

It seems, at long last, the Terminator franchise may finally be back.
