A temple in Thailand is constructing a massive sculpture of a 16th century Thai monk's head.

The Baan Pho temple in Chacheongsao, located east of Bangkok, is in the midst of building a 17 metre-tall sculpture of the revered monk, Coconuts Bangkok reports.

The monk, named Luang Pu Thuat, is believed to be able to grant protection to those who pray to him, and many Buddhists in Southeast Asia wear amulets bearing his likeness.

Unseen Tour Thailand has posted some pictures of the current state of construction, as well as renderings of what the complete sculpture would look like. It's expected to take a further three years to complete the construction.

Once it's completed, it will be the biggest sculpture of Luang in Thailand.

Despite the temple's good intentions, many are taking offence to the bodiless statue.

Some Facebook users have labelled the move disrespectful for displaying an unfinished statue:

Mostly, locals are finding the head-sculpture rather terrifying, and have posted pictures of the giant head staring at them across the road in Unseen Tour Thailand's comments section.
