VR is breathing an extra dimension of realism into horror games, but what if you could turn the tables and be the monster instead?

A Japanese game maker, Tatsunori Ishibashi, has been working on a VR version of horror classic The Ring, where the player embodies the haunting ghost Sadako herself.

The plot of the movie centres around the ghost, Sadako, who is seen in a video tape of a well. She kills her victims by crawling out of the well in the footage, and then out of the TV itself to scare the viewer to death.

In the VR game snippet above, you crawl out of that well and locate the TV, before emerging on the other side to a terrified victim backing away from you.

The game even simulates Sadako's characteristic long hair sweeping in front of your view, which looks kind of pesky actually. It appears that you can move your head to swing the hair sideways, or use your hands to part the hair as well so you can see better.

It's just a prototype for now, but it looks like wicked fun.

The first movie from The Ring trilogy came out in 1998, and the American version starring Naomi Watts was made in 2002.
