Time names Priyanka Chopra, Gina Rodriguez, Taraji P. Henson among 100 most influential people

"What's the the thing that's not in the world that should be in the world?" asks Lin-Manuel Miranda. It's the same question the editors of Time ask themselves when curating their annual list of the world's 100 Most Influential People, which reflects individuals' growth and reach in art, science, politics and more.

“When I look at the list overall, I’m humbled by the idea that we still have so much to learn—about our species and our place in the universe, about who we are as individuals and as nations, about what we owe each other and what we owe ourselves," said Time deputy managing editor Radhika Jones.

The list divides influencers into five categories -- pioneers, titans, artists, leaders and icons -- with many names that easily translate across those division lines. To describe these individuals in, Time turned to their peers: Star Wars collaborator J.J. Abrams writes about Miranda, Misty Copeland pens an appreciation of Stephen Curry, and Vice President Joe Biden gets to take on or Pope Francis.

"One way or another, they each embody a breakthrough," editor Nancy Gibbs said of the TIME 100. "They broke the rules, broke the record, broke the silence, broke the boundaries to reveal what we’re capable of."
