A very important announcement.

Good news for Olympic mascots fans and those already going through Olympics withdrawal: the official mascot designs for the Tokyo 2020 Games have been unveiled!

There were three mascots in the running and the final decision was chosen by 205,000 elementary school students across Japan.

Though the mascots are not yet named, they have little character descriptions. The blue Olympic mascot is said to "have a strong sense of justice" and be "very athletic," while the pink Paralympic mascot has "dignified inner strength" and "a kind heart that loves nature." Their personalities are designed to be opposite, but they respect each other and are good friends.

Both combine Japanese culture and modernity, their traditional checkered pattern juxtaposed with their more futuristic design.

Of course, people noticed that these designs are reminiscent of certain aspects of Japanese pop culture.

These adorable creatures will join a heralded line-up of other Olympic mascots, who promote sportsmanship and friendly international competition. Their official launch (and their names!) will take place this summer.
