UPDATE: Oct. 2, 2017, 9:20 p.m. PT: Tom Petty's manager has confirmed that the singer has died.

News of Tom Petty's death shocked the world Monday as it's still reeling from the deadliest mass shooting in American history during a concert in Las Vegas on Sunday. Petty was 66 years old.

Petty died Monday night at UCLA Medical Center surrounded by family and friends after suffering from a cardiac arrest during the early morning hours at his Malibu home.

With over 40 years in the music industry, Petty touched and inspired countless listeners with his timeless songs. The prolific guitar player, songwriter, and singer continued to play and create music, and was on tour with his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the time of his death.

Celebrities and musicians touched by Petty's lifelong work reacted to his death on Twitter, sending out heartfelt messages and feelings of grief on social channels.
