Twitter has changed its verified profiles policy, saying it will strip the blue checkmark from accounts that don't follow the new guidelines.

And its impact is now being felt among far-right personalities in the U.S. and UK.

Tommy Robinson, prominent British rightwing personality and founder of the English Defence League (EDL), said on Twitter he had his blue badge removed and commented: "& so it begins."

The same happened to Jason Kessler, the organiser of Unite the Right in Charlottesville and alt-righter Richard Spencer.

Twitter said on its support page that "promoting hate and/or violence against, or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease" can result in accounts losing the blue badge.

Other guidelines include "inciting or engaging in harassment of others," "violence and dangerous behaviour," and, "directly or indirectly threatening or encouraging any form of physical violence against an individual or any group of people, including threatening or promoting terrorism."
