Not everyone is laughing at a satirical Facebook page that describes how 'sh*t' their town is

It's funny, though.

Everyone loves to hear how shit a place is.

Not everyone is into the humour though. Take the kerfuffle brewing recently around a Facebook page called "Shit Towns of New Zealand."

The owner of the page has received 20 death threats in the past two years, as well as criticism from mayors of these towns.

"People have threatened to stab our eyes, throw us off a bridge that sort of thing," the page's owner, who is anonymous, told the New Zealand Herald.

The page puts the spotlight on towns around the country, with a tongue-in-cheek missive on how terrible they are.

Such as the town of Rotorua, where your Lord of the Rings tour might start: "Whilst New Zealand is a veritable smorgasbord of shit towns, only one literally smells like it," reads the Facebook post.

"Every week, hordes of unsuspecting tourists are lured to Rotorua by glossy brochures and promises of Lord of the Rings scenery, only to be greeted by a blanket of sulphuric gas and the overwhelming fragrance of a truck stop long drop ... Rotorua: New Zealand's Toilet."

Or Tokoroa: "Loathed by nature, economic forces and mankind alike, South Waikato’s Tokoroa is one of the turdiest turds in the toilet, a veritable checklist of shitness," the page's Facebook post reads.

South Waikato District Mayor Jenny Shattock told the newspaper "the people who write that sort of rubbish should be shot," although later said in a statement these comments weren't meant to be taken literally.

Surely New Zealand isn't that bad? People want to move there for work (well, just Wellington.)

Then again, if squabbles about how terrible each town is making news, perhaps that's an indicator that things aren't that bad after all.
