HBO has finally pulled the trigger on True Detective Season 3, with Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier on board to helm multiple installments alongside series creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Pizzolatto once again penned the entirety of the season, with the exception of episode 4, which he co-wrote with Deadwood creator David Milch.

The next installment of True Detective sounds like a return to the anthology show's Season 1 roots, telling the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

HBO also shared the first details of Mahershala Ali's lead character, Wayne Hays, who is a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts," said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. "With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective.”

Added Pizzolatto, "I'm tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy.  I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we're all very excited to tell this story."

A premiere date and episode count for True Detective Season 3 has yet to be announced. The previous two seasons both ran for eight episodes, with Season 1 premiering in January 2014 and Season 2 debuting in June 2015.
