Trump-Putin press conference gets a roasting from late show hosts

President Donald Trump's rather disturbing joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin was always going to be skewered by late-night hosts.

And they did not disappoint.

Following the presidents' double address in Helsinki on Monday, The Daily Show's Trevor Noah didn't hold back. Before the show, the team pointed out what Russia and America both got out of the summit:

Noah then spent a segment on the press conference, saying, "This is what happens when you put a KGB agent up against a KFC agent."

"If your name is Vladimir Putin, then today was a very good day," said Noah. "Because today, the president of the United States took your side in a fight between you and and the United States."

Noah highlighted an interview between CNN and William J. Burns, former U.S ambassador to Russia, who called the press conference "the single most embarrassing performance by an American president on the world stage that I've ever seen."

"Damn," said Noah. "'The most embarrassing performance by an American president.' Do you know how hard it is to achieve that? George H. W. Bush once threw up on the Japanese prime minister, and Trump is now on top."

The Daily Show host highlighted special counsel Robert Mueller's indictments against 12 Russian GRU military intelligence officers, as part of his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Mueller accused the Russian nationals of hacking Democrats' emails.

"So now, the formerly purposeless meeting between Trump and Putin had a meaning, right? It was time for Trump to put his foot down," said Noah, referring to Mueller's indictments. "And he did, right on America's dick."

"Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting Trump to cuss out Putin to his face but you have to admit it's pretty wild for the president of the United States to defend Russia against the United States. It's like seeing your team's cheerleader pumping up the other side," he continued.

Jimmy Kimmel also unpacked the summit, which he called Trump's "meeting with his KGBFF."

"Today was maybe the strangest of all 542 bizarre days of Donald Trump's reign of error," he said in his opening monologue on Monday night. "Helsinki has frozen over."

Kimmel noted the wink Trump gave to Putin moments after the two sat down in front of the press.

"Yeah, there you go. That's the 'thanks for keeping the the tape between us guys' wink," he said. And it wasn't the only reference to the infamous "pee tape" controversy Kimmel made.

After showing footage of Trump refusing to criticise Putin for Russian interference in the 2016 election, Kimmel said, "Well, I guess that settles it. If you're wondering whether or not Vladimir Putin has an incriminating video of Donald Trump, we now know beyond a treasonable doubt that he does."

"We haven't seen an American so owned by a Russian since Rocky IV," he said.

Over on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert also opened with a look at the summit. Using enraged responses from the likes of former CIA director John O. Brennan and Sen. John McCain as examples, Colbert said in his opening monologue that the summit was "so weird, so disturbing that it’s really upset people across the partisan divide in ways I have not seen in years."

The Late Show team also spoofed the 1957 "Let's all go to the lobby" cinema candy bar ad, with a twisted end.

A "theatrical adventure" is one word for it.
