A new satirical sketch by Indian digital entertainment company The Viral Fever's channel Girliyappa takes a hard-hitting look at marital rape in India through a spoof of the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Titled How I Raped Your Mother, it takes the form of a living room discussion in which the troubled protagonist Devika tells her family that her husband has been forcing himself on her. The family first dismisses her concerns, and then pressurises her to accept it and move on. The video uses a sitcom-style laughter track to highlight the family's nonchalant attitude towards rape and consent.

The video comes in the midst of an ongoing legal debate on marital rape, which is not considered to be a criminal offence in India. There are numerous arguments in favour of such a law, with a 2014 study by the International Centre for Women and United Nations Population Fund suggesting that one-third of the surveyed men had "admitted to forcing a sexual act on their wives".
