Twitter will soon start streaming professional baseball and ice hockey games, signing a deal to show one game per week on its platform.

The deal adds to Twitter's earlier moves to bring NFL football games to its users, having already streamed video from the Wimbledon tennis tournament and the Republican National Convention. Twitter will also be streaming this week's Democratic National Convention.

Twitter's future as a standalone company has been the subject of plenty of speculation, with critics arguing that the company has done little in recent years to bolster or improve its service.

It now appears that Twitter is moving in a very particular direction -- as a destination for live events.

“Twitter is the fastest way to see what’s unfolding in MLB and the NHL,” said Anthony Noto, Twitter’s chief financial officer, in a press release.

In addition to the games, Twitter will also host a new, exclusive highlights show called "The Rally," produced by 120 Sports.

Twitter's deal is officially with Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the technology arm of the MLB that powers a variety of streaming services.

“Twitter has long been a great partner and platform for both baseball and hockey fans as they follow their favorite teams and players every day,” said Kenny Gersh, MLBAM’s executive vice president of business, in the release.
