Twitter's Periscope videos will now play outside of the main app and website.

The videos will now play inside tweets that are embedded on other websites, Twitter announced Thursday.

The update means that Periscope broadcasts will function much more like other videos shared on Twitter when they appear outside of Twitter or Periscope's main app. Previously, embedded tweets containing Periscope videos only showed the URL for the broadcast, not the video itself.

With the change, which you can see in the tweet below, Periscope videos are integrated much more closely with tweets, though the Periscope URL will still appear.

Embedded tweets aside, Periscope is also getting a couple new features if its own: auto-playing videos in its app and a highlights feature that shows previews of key parts of clips.

Importantly, not all of Periscope's videos will automatically play within the app but those that are currently live will auto-play from the app's "watch" and "global feed" sections. The videos, which will play without sound during auto-play, are meant to help highlight some of the app's freshest content.

The feature is coming first to Periscope's Android app, but the company says it will bring auto-playing video to its iOS app "soon."

Highlights, on the other hand, adds a new layer of intelligence to what's actually happening in the videos themselves. The feature pulls key moments from the videos in your feeds and replays to generate quick teasers.

The feature will be on Pericope's iOS and Android apps "in the next few days," according to Twitter.

The company won't say exactly what it takes into account in generating these highlights, just that it uses "a variety of signals," adding that its methods will improve over time.
