UPDATE: Sept. 27, 2016, 5:23 p.m. SGT Taipei Water Department stops water supplies to four million in Taipei City.

People in Taiwan boarded up their houses and braced for the arrival of Typhoon Megi on Tuesday, its third typhoon in two weeks.

Authorities evacuated more than 5,000 people from their homes and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Schools and offices were declared shut for two days.

By noon on Tuesday, the power was knocked out in some 36,000 residences, reports AFP.

The Category 3 storm is unusually large and came packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (185 km/h).

On the east coast, the cities of Hualien and Taitung were right in the path of the typhoon as it made landfall.

Storm chaser James Reynolds was in Hualien to capture footage of the torrential rains and howling winds.

Flooding alongside roads was also seen amid heavy rainfall.

People elsewhere in Hualien posted similarly dramatic footage.

Other parts of Taiwan, such as Taipei City, saw similarly strong winds approaching, as the typhoon moved inland across the country.

Megi comes just two weeks after Taiwan was hit by Super Typhoon Meranti, the strongest storm on Earth this year and one of the most powerful typhoons on record.

Two people were killed by Meranti and more than 35 were injured, as 600,000 homes were left without water or power as a result of the storm.
