United Airlines adding another seat to each row in economy on Boeing 777s

United Airlines is adding a seat to each economy row on several of its Boeing 777s, going from nine seats across to 10. 

Consider this just the latest in the airline industry's constant march toward adding as much capacity as possible. The 10-across configuration for widebody aircraft is now considered the industry standard. 

The retrofitting will begin this May and be completed in 2017, according to Today in the Sky. The good news for passengers is the retrofit will also include the addition of power outlets at seats, and the aircraft will be Wi-Fi enabled.

And 10 seats is not the maximum number of seats being considered for jumbo jets: Airbus last year unveiled a design to put 11 seats in each economy row.

As for United, 19 of the airline's 74 Boeing 777-200s will get the additional seats.

With nine seats across, United's current Boeing 777s have from 217-221 economy seats depending on the configuration, according to SeatGuru. The additional seats will help the airline's bottom line.

While United's 777s now have either a 3-3-3 or 2-5-2 seat configuration, the new design will have a 3-4-3.

Last year, United announced it was adding rows to several of its fleet, in effect creating 14 new aircraft by adding seats.

United reported on Tuesday that February's passenger traffic had increased 2.7% and capacity had increased 6% year over year.
