The U.S. Mint and Treasury is making history with its 2017 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin.

In honor of the Treasury's 225th anniversary, it unveiled a new gold coin that portrays Lady Liberty as a woman of color for the first time ever.

At a press conference held on Thursday in the Department of Treasury's Cash Room, members of the Treasury unveiled the revolutionary coin, with the theme: "remembering our past and embracing our future."

The beautiful gold coin, which portrays Liberty as a black woman wearing a crown of stars, was described as a "departure from previous classic designs."

At the unveiling ceremony, Treasury Deputy Secretary Sarah Bloom Raskin, said that when she first saw the coin's design by Justin Kunz, it took her breath away.

"As we as a nation continue to evolve, so does liberty's representation," said Elisa Basnight, U.S. Mint chief of staff, "We live in a nation that affords us the opportunity to dream big and try to accomplish the seemingly impossible."

While a coin representing cultural diversity was long overdue, the Treasury announced that the 225th anniversary Mint is the first of a series of coins featuring depictions of "an allegorical Liberty in a variety of contemporary forms."

Future currencies will reportedly include designs to better represent the diversity present in the United States -- featuring other ethnicities such as "Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Indian-Americans" and more.
