A New York University professor is now the deputy head of India's federal bank and Indians are already obsessed with him.

After news broke Wednesday noon that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had appointed an economics professor, Viral Acharya, as its deputy governor, people began chattering on Twitter.

The 42-year-old Acharya, an alumni of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, taught Economics at NYU's Stern School of Business. He is also a research associate of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI).

Some were amused by his name.

Others appreciated his academic background which is similar to that of former Governor Raghuram Rajan, a hugely popular figure, who finished his term earlier this year.

At the time of writing, Viral Acharya was the top trending topic on Indian Twitter.

Some wondered if he has been brought in as the fall guy or to fix RBI's image after India's currency ban a month ago.
