Things are moving very quickly for Voltron, which DreamWorks Animation and Netflix announced in January for a 2016 launch. The series was dubbed a "reimagining" of the popular '80s series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
A Friday WonderCon panel featuring some of the key personnel involved with the series confirmed that the story will dive deeper than the original did.
"Let's represent everyone; show diversity and all types of people in this show!"
Defender of the Universe was a Japanese import during the '80s, created by piecing together two completely different shows that were popular in Japan. Scenes from
Beast King GoLionand
Armored Fleet Dairugger XVwere stitched together and overlaid with English-speaking voice actors.
The DreamWorks series, on the other hand, is an original work headlined by executive producers Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra) and Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and head writer Tim Hedrick (another Avatar/Korra vet).
The resumes of those top-level creatives are worth noting. Avatar and Korra are both known for wrapping the artistic sensibilities of Japanese anime into American TV series, and Legendary Defender looks to do the same.
The Voltron Twitter feed shared a number of highlights from the panel, including notable comments and images from the series.
