Warning: Spoilers for the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead Season 8 ahead.

Carl Grimes' final episode on The Walking Dead aired Sunday night and the character's devastating and surprising death was too much for most fans to handle.

After a months-long build up to the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead, fans were given an extra-long and touching tribute to Carl (Chandler Riggs), a staple of the series since the first season, who was shockingly bit by a zombie in December's mid-season finale.

Instead of going out with anger or fear, Carl took some time to take everything in and say goodbye to everyone rather peacefully in the episode titled "Honor."

Viewers shared their understandable grief online along with some of Riggs's former castmembers.

Andrew Lincoln, who plays Carl's father Rick in the show, probably had the best farewell out of anyone.

Katelyn Nacon, who play's Carl's love interest Enid, also shared a touching message to Riggs.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan on the show, wrote out a heartfelt message to Riggs on Instagram.

Fans who have watched Riggs and Carl grow up over the last eight years were dealing with the loss in their own ways.

Chandler Riggs shared his own message with everyone on Instagram along with a picture of himself from when he was first cast as Carl.

"You have given me this incredible opportunity to help tell a story that impacts people in so many ways," he wrote. "You gave me an opportunity to do what I love to do. So thank you, for letting me pursue my dream and continue to make you angry, sad, happy, and everything in between. I won’t let you down."

RIP Carl Grimes.
