Sullivan will write a weekly column at the Post and have "a broad mandate to cover media through a variety of formats, everything from a column to blog posts off the news to deeply reported stories," wrote Liz Seymour, executive features editor at WaPo, in a post announcing the move.

During her three-and-a-half years at the Times, Sullivan emerged as one of the most thoughtful voices in the media world particularly around questions of changing journalism ethics in the transition to digital media.

She published a variety of articles that posed tough questions about the Times. Most recently, she pointed to the paper's spotty coverage of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and questioned how the paper decides to allocate its reporters.

Sullivan was quoted by Seymour as saying she joined the Post because its “leadership, ambitions, and journalistic excellence make it a very cool place to be.”

Sullivan appears to be leaving on good terms, with Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. writing in a memo that she "ushered the position into a new age" in her time as public editor. Sulzberger added that the paper will soon name a successor for the position, which acts as the paper's ombudsman.

The move was roundly applauded by the media Twitterati.

Jeff Bezos is the owner of the Post.
