A Whitney Houston documentary is coming to Showtime

Four years after Whitney Houston's tragic death at the age of 48, Showtime has announced that it's starting production on a documentary about the six-time Grammy winner. The film will be helmed by Nick Broomfield, the director behind 2002's Biggie & Tupac and 1998's Kurt & Courtney.

In a press release, Showtime said the doc will offer a "raw and uncensored look" at the life of the icon through interviews, behind the scenes footage and archival performances. 

“Nick is a bold storyteller with an acclaimed track record of provocative documentary filmmaking,” Showtime's Vinnie Malhotra said in a statement. “Showtime Documentary Films is thrilled to partner with him on this project, as he delves deep into the life of Whitney Houston to tell the real story behind the rise and fall of one of America’s most iconic singers.”

Kurt & Courtney, released four years after the Nirvana frontman's death, was highly controversial for suggesting that Cobain's wife, Courtney Love, may have played a role in the musician's death. The documentary's Sundance screening was canceled after Love's lawyers reportedly threatened to sue the festival for defamation of character.
