WikiLeaks has called on people to leak Donald Trump's tax returns after Kellyanne Conway, a senior counselor to the U.S. president, confirmed he won't do so.

The organisation, which released hacked emails from the Democratic Party during the presidential campaign, tweeted:

They also slammed Trump for breaking an electoral promise -- and historic tradition for presidents -- to disclose information on their finances:

Conway told ABC's This Week that Trump's administration will not release the president's tax returns:

“The White House response is that he’s not going to release his tax returns,” she said. “We litigated this all through the election.”

"People didn’t care. They voted for him, and let me make this very clear: most Americans are — are very focused on what their tax returns will look like while President Trump is in office, not what his look like."

A petition on the White House website calling for the release of the returns "with all information needed to verify emoluments clause compliance" collected 255,947 signatures.

A recent Washington Post-ABC poll showed that 74 percent of Americans, including 53 percent of Republicans, want to see Trump’s returns.
