Variety broke the news that Simon Rich (The Secret Life of Pets) will write the script for Warner Bros. and David Heyman, who previously teamed on the Harry Potter franchise, as well as the upcoming tentpole Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will produce.

Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the classic character from the Roald Dahl estate, whose manager Michael Siegel will also serve as a producer on the project.

Wonka has previously been played by Johnny Depp (who will not return) and Gene Wilder, who died Aug. 29.

Warner Bros. has franchise hopes for the new Willy Wonka, who was only a supporting character in Dahl's books "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (1964) and "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" (1972).

Wonka was last seen on screen in the 2005 Warner Bros. movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was directed by Tim Burton. The reboot will surely be a sweet gig for any A-list filmmaker.
