Rebel Wilson does comedy for a living, but making false claims about her is no laughing matter.

The actress is suing magazine publisher Bauer Media and its Australian arm for defamation, according to a writ filed with the Supreme Court of Victoria on Monday and obtained by Mashable Australia.

In the writ, several of the publisher's titles -- Woman's Day, Women's Weekly, New Weekly and OK Magazine -- are claimed to have damaged Wilson's reputation through print and online articles expressing she had lied about her age and her upbringing.

An article published by Woman's Day titled "Just who is the REAL Rebel?" in May last year implied that Wilson is a "serial liar who has invented fantastic stories in order to make it in Hollywood," according to the writ.

The article included claims Wilson had lied about her age, her real name, her family's occupation and that she had lived in Zimbabwe for a year.

Another article by Women's Weekly titled "Rebel Wilson's real name and age revealed," also published in May of last year, again speculated about her age. It then claimed she had lied about growing up in a disadvantaged part of Sydney in an interview with David Letterman.

The articles on Wilson had "gravely injured in her feelings, credit and reputation" according to the writ, where she is seeking damages from the loss of earnings due to movie roles not offered to her as a result.

Wilson took aim at the media on Twitter around the time of those articles, joking she actually is a "100-year old mermaid formerly known as 'CC Chalice'" -- while also thanking the Australian media for being jealous of her success.

Don't mess with this mermaid, Australian media.
