'The Witcher' card game 'Gwent' takes on a life of its own
Would you like to play Gwent?
Fans of The Witcher 3 know this refrain well, and starting in September they'll be able to pose that question to IRL friends. That's when developer CD Projekt Red is planning to kick off the beta for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.

Based on the game that appears in The Witcher 3 while improving on it, Gwent exists primarily because of fans. It was such a popular optional minigame in CDPR's 2015 hit that fans clamored for more, even created their own decks.
The Poland-based developer took note of this and -- likely emboldened by the runaway success of Blizzard's Hearthstone -- set to work on creating a standalone spin-off.
Gwent gives players the option of setting out in a single player "story" mode or taking on friends and strangers alike in online competitive matches.
It's a deck-building game that splits up around four different factions, each based on different groups from The Witcher universe. Players play their cards on a three-lane board that covers melee, ranged and siege attackers, with each position and card providing different benefits.
You can get a better sense of the game rules and sign up for the beta on the official website, playgwent.com. The fun is set to begin this September on PC and Xbox One.
