On August 26, 1920, the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution officially gave women the right to vote in state and federal elections. Every year, we celebrate this historic victory with Women's Equality Day, including on Twitter, where this year, people used the hashtags #WomensEqualityDay and #EqualityCantWait to call attention to the day — and how necessary it is to keep fighting.

Because while women can vote, that's only part of the story, and there's still a long way to go.

How long? The World Economic Forum measures gender parity by four categories: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. At the current rate, according to their Global Gender Gap Report, it will take the United States 208 years to reach true gender equality. In 2018, out of 149 countries, just 17 have women as their heads of state.

There are a lot of things that women still need to fight for — reproductive rights, ending harassment in the workplace, and equal pay, to name a few. This Women's Equality Day, here are some tweets to remind you of how far we've come, and how far we still need to go.

1. Women can vote, but there are problems with our voting system.

2. Women of color were barred from voting for a long time, and often, they still face voter suppression.

3. Equality comes in many forms.

4. Women shouldn't have to continue to put up with unfair treatment.

5. Men and women should be paid equally.

6. We need to continue to work for women's equality today and every day.

Women may have come a long way, but there's still work to be done until we're truly equal. Tweets like these remind us that the fight for equality is never really over. We must keep working to make sure that future generations have a seat at the table.
