Alamo Drafthouse announces a women-only screening of 'Wonder Woman' and of course men are upset
Behind every great women's event is a man upset that he wasn't invited.
This week, the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin announced a women-only screening of Wonder Woman – and predictably, it didn't take long for a bunch of dudes to show up in the comments, crying about the sheer injustice of it all.
Not the injustice of Wonder Woman having to wait 76 years for her own live-action solo movie when Batman and Superman have about a million each, mind you. Nor the injustice of Hollywood underserving the female audience when women and girls make up half the population.
No, they're just really mad that there's this one screening they're not invited to, despite the fact that all other Wonder Woman showings scheduled at the Drafthouse are totally standard (i.e., mixed-gender).
The Drafthouse, though, doesn't seem too bothered by the blowback. In fact, it kinda seems like they're enjoying talking back.
That said, they're willing to let the men have a male-only event:
Nor is the Drafthouse bothered by "threats" from men to show up pretending to identify as women:
Indeed, the Wonder Woman women-only screening is turning out to be such a success that Drafthouse is teasing the possibility of hosting similar events in the future.
And despite what this guy might want to believe ...
The women-only Wonder Woman screening is, in fact, all sold out. The Drafthouse has since added a second screening which, as of writing, is well on its way to selling out as well.
Alamo Drafthouse creative manager Morgan Hendrix commented on the reactions to Wonder Woman in a statement to Mashable:
We are very excited to present select, women-only Wonder Woman screenings at Alamo Drafthouse. That providing an experience where women truly reign supreme has incurred the wrath of trolls only serves to deepen our belief that we're doing something right.
As a result, we will be expanding this program across the country and inviting women everywhere to join us as we celebrate this iconic superheroine in our theaters.
Yup, that's right – the Drafthouse is so pleased with the overall response that they're planning to bring the program to other locations. We're told that the Dallas, Austin, and DC locations will donate proceeds from ticket sales to local women's charities.
