LONDON -- People in Britain feel very passionately about crisps.

In an attempt to solve the decades-old playground arguments and heated pub debates, TV presenter and gameshow host Richard Osman took to Twitter on Saturday to settle things once and for all -- with a tense, last-crisp-standing style showdown voted for by a ravenous public.

The whole thing was planned meticulously.

Here's how the group stages panned out.

Following a few one-on-one battles that were required to clear up dead heats, 24 qualifiers advanced to the second round.

By this point bets were already taking place.

Round Two took place on Sunday, and proved to be just as closely fought as the group stages.

As the competition reached its final stages, the debate heated up.

Many people had clear favourites.

Others, meanwhile, had clear least favourites.

The quarter finals consisted of four groups of three. Things were getting tense.

While Walkers Cheese & Onion and Monster Munch Pickled Onion clearly triumphed in their respective groups, Quavers edged past Frazzles and Nik Naks Nice & Spicy and Wotsits only narrowly defeated McCoys Steak to join them in the semi-finals.

For the penultimate stage, Wotsits were drawn against Quavers while the two onion-based flavours faced off against each other.

After Wotsits scraped past Quavers in a nail-biting head-to-head, they were left to face off against Monster Munch Pickled Onion in the final.

After two days and well over a million votes in total, here's how it all ended.

A controversial champion, perhaps, but a clear one. Monster Munch Pickled Onion may not be everyone's favourite flavour, but after winning every one of its battles it emerged victorious as the people's champion of crisps.

Well done, Monster Munch Pickled Onion. Well done.

Meanwhile, rumours of the next big event have already started.

Until next time...
