Actors dressed as World War I soldiers have descended on stations across the UK to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Silently, the actors mixed with commuters and handed out business cars detailing the names of those who died, the battalion in which they fought, their age and date of their death: 1 July 1916.

The cards also carried the #wearehere hashtag, which has been used by commuters in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Plymouth to share the pictures on social media.

About 20,000 people -- the number of British soldiers who died 100 years ago -- are believed to be taking part in the tribute, which was organised by a PR company for an arts and culture client to be revealed later, according to Buzzfeed.

Some soldiers were filmed while singing a rendition of "We're Here Because We're Here," sung by soldiers in the trenches in 1916.

The Battle of the Somme, one of WWI's bloodiest, was fought in northern France and lasted five months. The British and French armies fought the Germans in a brutal battle of attrition on a 15-mile front.
