Before talking about any of the products lined up for debut, Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off the 2016 WWDC with a moment of silence for the victims of the attack in Orlando on Sunday night.

Offering Apple's heartfelt condolences, Cook called it a "senseless and unconscionable act of terror and hate."

But he didn't stop there, he doubled down on the sentiment by reaffirming what Apple is all about.

"The apple community is made up of people from all around the world," said Cook.n "We celebrate our diversity. We know that it makes us stronger, and moves everyone forward."

At that point, Cook asked the audience to rise and join him in a solemn moment of silence as he bowed his head alone on stage. It was a powerful moment for both the company and Cook, who has openly spoken about his life as a gay man. Whatever the company had in store for the rest of the day, the start of the event was easily one of its most historic and well received.
