UPDATE: Dec. 12, 2017, 9:49 a.m. EST This article previously stated both Xbox One S and X consoles can stream 4K video now. Only Xbox One X consoles can now do so; Microsoft is working on making the feature available for One S consoles.

Xbox One X consoles can stream 4K resolution videos through the YouTube app now, a month after the 4K-ready One X was released.

Microsoft released an update to the YouTube app available to Xbox One consoles, allowing the One X to play videos in resolutions up to 4K. The YouTube app is currently the only way to watch 4K videos on the console.

Microsoft has marketed the Xbox One X as the most powerful gaming console ever, which is true when it comes to playing games in 4K, but it never was capable of being a 4K multimedia system. The console's only draw is its 4K capabilities, so its surprising that it took so long for anything outside of games to be shown in 4K.

The Xbox One X's predecessor, the Xbox One S, was released in August 2016 as an enhanced version of the Xbox One, which touted the ability to play games in better-than-1080p (but not quite 4K) as well as play 4K video. Over a year later, the Xbox One S is still unable to stream 4K videos through YouTube, but the team is working on making that a reality.

YouTube has supported 4K videos since 2015.

The app is available to download now from the Microsoft store, and will be rolling out to Xbox One X consoles automatically this week.
