The Xena reboot may only still be in the very early stages of development, but the script's writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach says he has a clear vision of exactly what it will be: a story of courage, ass-kicking, and redemption that doesn't dance around any LGBT themes.

Speaking on Twitter and Tumblr, Grillo-Marxuach told Xena fans the undertone-filled friendship shared between Xena and Gabrielle will likely be much more than that should the show be picked up to series.

"Their relationship IS the show for me and it will be explored in ways it could not in the 90s," he wrote on Twitter, expanding on comments he'd made in earlier interviews and on Tumblr.

His comments come as fans of CW's The 100, a show for which he is a writer, continue their quest for closure after Lexa, a lesbian character, was shot and killed in a recent episode.

In the wake of Lexa's death, fans have directed criticism toward the show's writers and creators for bringing the LGBT character to what they feel was a stereotypical tragic end.

Grillo-Marxuach calmed one fan's concerns by saying he's "a very different person with a very different view" than Jason Rothenberg, creator of The 100.

"Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons," he wrote on Tumblr. "There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s."

Above all, though, he added, the show will be rooted in the principles that guided it during its original run, he said.
